Our Mission
The Burning Glass Institute believes that everyone deserves meaningful work and the chance to move up. The Burning Glass Institute is a fully independent, nonprofit data laboratory that generates and mines novel datasets to construct innovative models, metrics, and benchmarks whose insights boost economic mobility, drive worker and community prosperity, and bring new efficiency to how talent and opportunity connect.
Working at the intersection of the future of work and the future of learning, our research shapes public discourse on a range of critical topics. Our widely cited reports are regularly featured in major media outlets. Our work with companies, education institutions and systems, communities, government agencies, and philanthropies supports efforts to drive fundamental transformations that grow talent, advance worker mobility, and improve educational outcomes.
The Institute also is home to high-profile signature initiatives, including the Where You Work Matters; the Credential Value Index, a non-degree credential outcomes evaluation center; and the College Completion Initiative. The Institute’s Scaled Impact Laboratory experiments with ways to bring insights generated through our work to a wider audience. Founded in 2022 and building on a legacy of breakthrough innovation in labor market analytics, the Institute has rapidly become a trusted voice bridging industry, educators, policymakers, and workers. Our team brings together a staff of 45 economists, data scientists, and policy and program experts, plus several Senior Fellows from academia and industry, to work on projects across the globe.

Our Impact
Our experiments have uncovered breakthrough insights that are reshaping how America approaches mobility and opportunity.
These experiments reach millions through partnerships to help Fortune 100 companies redefine talent strategies, federal agencies redesign workforce programs, and educators rethink what they teach. Our findings are regularly featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and Forbes—but, more importantly, they are changing hiring practices, education funding, and policy decisions nationwide.
