In Memoriam – Stuart Andreason
It is with deep sadness that we announce that Stuart Andreason, Ph.D., Executive Director of Programs at the Burning Glass Institute has passed away after a brief but brave battle with cancer.
Stuart was a foundational pillar of the organization's research and engagement efforts across workforce innovation, higher education, and economic mobility. He drove and shaped much of BGI's core work, leading the development of Jobs that Mobilize, an initiative that built data strategies to align talent and economic development, while also developing measures of skill-based hiring, identifying in-demand skills in the green economy, and creating credential quality standards through the EQOS initiative. His fingerprints were on virtually every major strand of BGI's mission, helping to define the organization's approach to skill-based educational strategies and labor market innovation.
Prior to BGI, Stuart founded and directed the Center for Workforce and Economic Opportunity at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, where he spearheaded major national initiatives including Investing in America's Workforce,Workforce Realigned, and contributions to the Rework America Alliance and Talent Finance Innovation Network. His broader research focused on state and regional economic opportunity, labor market trends, and opportunity occupations — middle-skill, high-wage jobs — with several published works and edited volumes to his name. Earlier in his career, he conducted urban research at the University of Pennsylvania, developed sustainable community indicators for HUD, led two nonprofit organizations focused on economic revitalization efforts in Virginia, and held fellowships with the Department of Education and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy.
Most importantly, Stuart was passionate about his family. He leaves behind his wonderful wife, Lauren, and their four beautiful children: Charlotte (11), Ellis (10), Walter (7), and Phoebe (4).
