Data Scientist (Part-Time)

Job Title: Data Scientist (Part-Time)
Location: USA (Remote)

About Us

The Burning Glass Institute (BGI) is a leading labor-market research center dedicated to shaping the discourse on workforce trends, equity, and talent development. We conduct data-driven research to uncover dynamics in labor markets, worker mobility, and firm-level practices—research designed to influence policy, guide business decisions, and spark public debate.

Overview

The Burning Glass Institute is looking for a PhD student in a quantitative field with a strong focus on Data Science to work with us as a Part-Time Data Scientist. The position would be fully remote with the expected workload to be about 10-20 hours per week. Part-timers will work closely with our full-timers in the data team to understand project needs, while also having significant freedom to complete the work in their own way. The Burning Glass Institute has access to unique proprietary data sets on career history profiles and job ads which are on the cutting edge of labor market data and are hard to find in other places.

Key Responsibilities

As a Part-Time Data Scientist at the Burning Glass Institute, you will play a crucial role in building our organization’s data features and infrastructure. The data team works to clean, extract, and classify hundreds of millions of job postings and worker profiles from across the globe. In this role, you would use your machine learning, NLP, LLM, data engineering, and programming skills to help expand our capabilities to build large-scale pipelines to process text data, extract new elements, and build features used by the research team. You may also contribute to other aspects of the team’s work, including our salary data, streamlining data pipelines, and taxonomy development. Extensive experience building NLP pipelines and applying them to large collections of text data is a must.

Required Qualifications

  • Must be enrolled in a PhD program in a quantitative field with a strong focus on Data Science (third year and beyond preferred) and available to work about 10-20 hours per week.

  • Significant experience in using NLP methods to clean and categorize raw data, including but not limited to semantic search, clustering, NER, regex, the use of LLM APIs, embeddings for classification or structured extraction, and effective prompt iteration.

  • Experience working in AWS or other cloud computing platforms.

  • Experience using Python and SQL to clean and manipulate data of many formats, including unstructured and semi-structured.

  • Proficiency in working with larger-than-memory datasets using Python and parallel computing libraries (multiprocessing, Dask, PySpark, etc.).

  • Expertise in supervised and unsupervised machine learning and deep learning methods, including common toolkits like Scikit-Learn and PyTorch.

  • Knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and design patterns.

  • Deep understanding of the neural architecture of LLMs and other neural sequence models.

  • Ability to maintain significant overlap with Eastern Time (ET) working hours for effective collaboration.

  • Research interests that align with the Burning Glass Institute is a plus.
