Position Overview:

As an Associate Economist at the Burning Glass Institute, you will play a crucial role in conducting data-intensive research to analyze labor market trends, worker mobility, equity, talent development, job creation, and firm-level practices. You will be responsible for coordinating and executing research projects, developing robust research methodologies, and collecting, managing, and analyzing data and materials. You will work closely with our Chief Economist and team of economists, leveraging cutting-edge datasets, including social profiles and online job postings, to complement official labor market data sources.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Data Analysis: Perform in-depth data analysis using tools such as R and/or Python and SQL to extract meaningful insights from a wide range of data sources, including cloud-hosted relational databases.

Research Coordination: Collaborate with the team of economists to design, plan, and execute research projects, ensuring the highest standards of data accuracy and analysis.

Methodology Development: Develop and refine research methodologies to address complex labor market questions.

Data Collection: Organize, manage, and understand diverse data sets related to labor market trends and workforce dynamics.

Data Visualization: Create compelling data visualizations and research summaries to communicate research findings effectively to a lay audience.

Market Knowledge: Stay informed about trends and economic research relevant to US and global labor markets, contributing valuable insights and novel research ideas to our research efforts.

Team Collaboration: Work harmoniously within a remote, team-oriented environment, contributing to the team’s knowledge base and taking initiative to provide and gather feedback.

Deadline Management: Thrive in a dynamic research environment by meeting project deadlines and delivering high-quality results.

 

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in economics, quantitative social science, data science, or similarly quantitative subject.

  • Solid experience in data wrangling and data analysis of economic microdata using R or Python.

  • Experience with producing and explaining data analyses and data visualizations for a lay audience.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with an ability to interpret complex data.

  • Familiarity with economic research methodologies and related econometric and statistical tools.

  • A solid understanding of economic principles and concepts, especially as they relate to US and global labor markets and workforce dynamics.

  • Detail-oriented approach with a strong commitment to data accuracy.

  • Effective time management skills to prioritize tasks, work efficiently, and meet project deadlines while maintaining the quality of work.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in economics or related quantitative field.

  • Familiarity with relational databases and cloud computing to access, query, and analyze large, structured data.

  • Experience with version control systems, such as Git, and maintaining comprehensive documentation for research projects.

  • Familiarity with or interest in current labor market dynamics, trends, and policies, both in the United States and globally.

  • Familiarity with common public-use data sets used for economic research such as those created by the Census and Bureau of Labor Statistics.

  • Ability to attend in-person meetings and working sessions in our New York office is a plus.
